Rumor: iPhone 5 won’t have NFC
Rumor hints that the upcoming Apple iphone 5 will not support mobile payments through NFC (Near Field Communication Technology), even though this service is very popular and also added to the Android operating system recently. The British media said that Apple has revealed the next generation iPhone will not support Near Field Communication Technology according to a local mobile operator.
Here is the source from The Independent:
Sources at several of the largest mobile operators in the UK revealed Apple had disclosed in meetings that it would not be including Near Field Communication (NFC) technology – which enables payment for products with a wave of your phone on a reader – in the latest version of the iPhone, be it the iPhone 4GS or the iPhone 5.
One source close to the discussions said: “The new iPhone will not have NFC, Apple told the operators it was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry.” Yet Apple is understood to be working on its own NFC proposition, which would link payments through iTunes. It hopes to introduce the technology in a handset likely to be released next year.
As we know, the recent released Apple iPad 2 also doesn’t support the Near Field Communication Technology. Apple insiders said that the next generation iPhone won’t support NFC too, because Apple told the operators that there is no any specific standard in this industry.
However, someone guess that Apple is developing NFC payment platform based on iTunes. The platform will compete with some services in mobile operators’ planning. And these operators will cooperate with banks to deploy some necessary hardware in retailers and tourist attractions.
The analyst Carolina Milanesi from Gartner said that NFC has been discussed for several years by Nokia but still no any results. Now Google and Apple started to discuss it, NFC will come soon. However, in early of this year all mainstream mobile operators promised that they would launch the NFC commercial service. And now GSM Association is developing the essential verification and testing standards to make sure the intercommunity of NFC in global.
