The biggest loser for this deal will be users. T-Mobile always devotes itself to vigorously promote its low-cost voice and data plan, by this means it hopes to compete with the larger rivals. This competition has cut the price low enough which is beneficial to users. However, with the merge of AT&T and T-mobile, American national operators are reduced to three, namely AT&T、Verizon and Sprint. On the whole, American users will be damaged.
Before the announcement of this acquisition, cellphone manufacturers like HTC and Motorola have two GSM operators to select. But now they are only left with only one GSM operator, so they will lose the profit and the right to fix the price of cellphone in America’s market. Even if LTE is about to become the standard for the 4G world, cellphone manufactures will still be dominated by three operators. This will lead mobile phone manufacturers to be completely at the mercy of large operators.
According to media reports, Sprint, the third largest operator in the United States, ever started negotiation with T-Mobile about the acquisition. However, the higher quotation of AT&T crowed out Sprint so that scale and frequency spectrum of Sprint is at a disadvantage. If the deal is to be approved, Sprint will be at a disadvantageous position. Furthermore, Sprint and T-Mobile always sing a different tune on regulatory issues against AT&T and Verizon. So if AT&T will conduct a successful takeover, Sprint will be isolated in many issues.
Another main loser in this deal will be Google. T-Mobile once was a good partner for Google Android operating system. But now Google has to be subject to Verizon and AT&T. These two large operators attempt to force Android to provide service for them.
